How to track your contributions

Your online account keeps a running total of the contributions you've made for the current tax year, so you can see where you stand against your annual limit.

Steps / Explanation

The contributions section of your online account shows every contribution processed to date for the current tax year, along with the tax year each contribution was designated for. This matters because contributions made between January 1 and the tax filing deadline can be designated for either the current or the prior tax year — the running total reflects the tax-year designation you selected at the time of contribution, not necessarily the calendar date the money arrived.

What the running total includes — and doesn't

The contribution tracker includes direct contributions only. It does not include transfers or rollovers, since those movements are not subject to the annual contribution limit. See "Contributions — limits, deadlines, and how to make them" for the full definition of what counts as a contribution.

If you hold both a Traditional and a Roth IRA at Retired.com, the tracker shows your combined total across both accounts, since the annual limit applies per person, not per account.

Keeping your own records

Digital Trust, the custodian for your account, files Form 5498 reporting your contributions to the IRS annually, but you're still responsible for tracking non-deductible contributions on Form 8606 if applicable, and for confirming your total contributions across all your IRAs — including any held at other custodians — stay within the annual limit. See "Your recordkeeping responsibilities as an SDIRA holder" for what to keep and for how long.

Common questions

Does the tracker account for contributions I made at another custodian?
No. It only reflects contributions made to your Retired.com account. If you hold IRAs elsewhere, you're responsible for tracking your combined total against the annual limit yourself, ideally with a tax advisor's help.

I made a contribution in March and designated it for the prior tax year — why does it show up under this year in some views?
The transaction date and the tax-year designation are tracked separately. Check the "tax year" column specifically, not just the transaction date, to see which year a contribution counts toward.

Where do I see my catch-up contribution if I'm 50 or older?
Catch-up contributions appear as regular contributions in the tracker — they're not broken out separately, since they simply raise your total allowed limit for the year rather than being a distinct contribution type.
