How to update your personal information
Keeping your contact and identity information current helps Retired.com reach you about your account and keeps your IRS reporting accurate.
Steps / Explanation
Most personal information updates — mailing address, phone number, and email — can be made directly in your online account under account settings. Changes typically take effect immediately.
Changes that require additional verification
Some updates require extra steps because they affect identity-sensitive or IRS-reported information:
Legal name changes. Require supporting documentation (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order) since your name must match IRS records for accurate Form 5498 and Form 1099-R reporting.
Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number corrections. Require Service Team assistance and documentation, since this number is central to all IRS reporting on your account.
Banking information for contributions or distributions. Require a verification step to protect against unauthorized changes.
Contact the Service Team to process any of these — they can't be self-served from the account settings page for security reasons.
Why this matters for your account
Digital Trust, the custodian for your account, reports contributions, distributions, and FMV information to the IRS under the name and taxpayer ID on file. A mismatch between your account information and your tax return can create reporting discrepancies that are time-consuming to correct later. Updating promptly when your information changes — especially after a legal name change or address move — helps avoid that.
Common questions
How long does an address change take to process?
Address and contact information updates made through your online account take effect immediately. Statements and communications sent after the update use the new information.
I got married and changed my name — what do I need to submit?
Contact the Service Team with your marriage certificate or other legal name-change documentation. They'll update your account and confirm the new name will be used for future IRS reporting.
Can I update my beneficiary's information the same way?
No — beneficiary designations are updated through a separate process. See "How to add or change beneficiaries".
