My funding is delayed — what to do

The most common causes of a stalled contribution, transfer, or rollover — and the fastest way to get things moving again.

If your contribution, transfer, or rollover is taking longer than expected, this article walks through the most common causes and the fastest way to get things moving again.

Steps / Explanation

1. Check the paperwork first

The single most common cause of a stalled funding request is an incomplete or unsigned form. Funds don't post to your account until the required form for your funding method is signed and in good order — money that arrives without its paperwork simply waits. Check your email (including spam) for a DocuSign request or funding instructions you may not have completed, and check your portal's document area for anything pending.

2. Match the timeline to your method

Before assuming something's wrong, compare against the normal timeline for your method in Funding timelines by method — a few of them, like ACH contributions (up to 7 business days) and transfers (up to a few weeks, depending on your current custodian), are slower than people expect even when everything is working.

3. Look at the usual suspects

For transfers: your current custodian may require an original "wet" signature or a Medallion Signature Guarantee, or your statement may be missing required details (name, account type, account number, custodian). In-kind transfers also simply run longer. After the request is with your current custodian, they control release timing — following up with them directly is often the fastest fix.

For rollovers: most plans mail a check rather than wire. If the check went to you, it needs to be forwarded to Digital Trust, our custodian; and the rollover certification form must be signed before funds post. For an indirect rollover, keep the 60-day redeposit window in mind.

For contributions: ACH pulls can't start until your ACH form and a voided check or bank verification letter are on file; wires can be held up on the sending bank's side; mailed checks add transit time.

4. Contact the Service Team

If your paperwork is complete and the normal timeline has passed, contact the Service Team with your funding method and the date you initiated — they can check status on our side and coordinate with the Operations Team, which processes funding requests.

Common questions

My money left my old account but isn't showing at Retired.com. Where is it? Usually in transit or awaiting paperwork. Checks add mail time, and no funds post until the required signed form is complete. The Service Team can confirm whether anything is outstanding.

Will a delay cause me to miss the contribution deadline? Prior-year contributions count by the tax-filing deadline (without extensions) — if you're close to it, contact the Service Team about the fastest option. We recommend consulting a tax advisor or attorney for guidance specific to your situation.

Does a delayed indirect rollover put me at tax risk? It can — indirect rollovers must be completed within 60 days to avoid taxes and possible penalties. If you're mid-window and worried, contact the Service Team promptly.
