Not every cryptocurrency in your account is eligible for staking, and each eligible asset has its own minimum and timing. This article covers what it takes to stake.
Steps / Explanation
To stake an asset in your Retired.com account, three things need to be true:
The asset is on the eligible list. Only specific Proof of Stake (PoS) assets support staking — eligibility is set by Retired.com and can change as networks and custody arrangements evolve.
You hold at least the staking minimum. Each asset has its own minimum quantity required to stake, shown in the table below.
The asset isn't already staked or otherwise restricted. You can't stake a position that's already staked, in the process of unstaking, or otherwise flagged as restricted on your account.
Currently eligible assets
Asset | Staking minimum | Staking wait time* | Payout frequency | Unstaking wait time* |
Ethereum (ETH) | 1 ETH | Varies | Monthly | Varies |
Sui (SUI) | 1 SUI | Up to 8 days | Monthly | Up to 8 days |
Solana (SOL) | 8 SOL | Up to 10 days | Monthly | Up to 10 days |
Cardano (ADA) | 2,500 ADA | Up to 17 days | Monthly | 1–7 days |
Polkadot (DOT) | 2,500 DOT | Up to 7 days | Monthly | Up to 35 days |
*Wait times are estimates. Actual times vary with network conditions, validator performance, and processing volume, and are subject to change. See "Staking Cardano (ADA)" for a detailed breakdown of one asset's timing, or "How does staking work?" for what drives these ranges.
Eligibility can change
The eligible-asset list, minimums, and wait times can change at Retired.com's discretion as networks update their protocols or as custody arrangements evolve. If an asset you've staked becomes ineligible for future staking, your existing staked position isn't automatically affected, but check with the Service Team about any transition steps.
Common questions
Why is there a minimum amount required to stake?
Minimums reflect what's practical to stake efficiently on each network — smaller amounts can be inefficient or, on some networks, not supported at the validator level.
Can I stake only part of my holdings in an asset?
Yes, as long as the amount you choose to stake meets the minimum for that asset. You don't have to stake your entire position.
What happens if I don't meet the minimum?
You can still hold and trade the asset normally — you just won't be able to stake it until your position meets the minimum.
