Staking Polkadot (DOT)

Minimums, timing, and reward details for staking Polkadot (DOT), including its 28-day unbonding period.

Polkadot (DOT) is one of the cryptocurrencies eligible for staking in a Retired.com account. This article covers the specific minimums and timing that apply to staking DOT — including its 28-day unbonding period, the longest of any asset we support.

Steps / Explanation

Polkadot runs on a proof-of-stake consensus model, so DOT held in your account can be staked to support the network and potentially earn rewards, credited directly to your account. If you meet the eligibility requirements in Staking Eligibility Requirements, you can stake or unstake DOT at any time through the asset's details page — see How to Stake and Unstake Crypto on Retired.com for the exact steps.

What these periods mean

  • Processing period is the time it takes Retired.com to batch and submit your staking or unstaking request.

  • Bonding period for DOT is effectively none — once your staking request is processed, your position becomes active without an additional network-side delay.

  • Unbonding period is Polkadot's network-enforced 28-day delay between an unstaking request being processed and your DOT becoming available to trade. This is a rule of the Polkadot network itself, not a Retired.com policy.

  • Rewards re-staked means DOT rewards are automatically added to your staked position rather than paid out as a separate available balance, compounding your stake over time.

See How Does Staking Work for how these component periods generally combine across different assets.

Common questions

Why does unstaking DOT take up to 35 days?
Polkadot's network design imposes a 28-day unbonding period on all unstaked positions, on top of the 1–7 day processing period. Every staker on the Polkadot network faces the same delay, whichever platform they use. Plan ahead if you expect to need access to staked DOT — for example, for a trade or a distribution.

Does my DOT earn rewards during the 28-day unbonding period?
No — once your unstaking request is processed, the position stops earning while it unbonds. The DOT also isn't available to trade until unbonding completes.

Why is the DOT staking minimum 2,500?
Minimums reflect what's practical on each network, not relative value — Polkadot's staking design and typical position sizes differ from networks with lower minimums like Ethereum or SUI.
